Thanks to the digital age, the 21st Century Eye is getting used as never before. And that carries consequences because looking at a computer screen, smartphone or tablet is different from reading printed pages, and often makes your eyes work harder.
According to the American Optometric Association, 55% of adults in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and throughout the U.S. use computers, smartphones, tablets or other handheld devises for five or more hours a day.
83 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 17 estimate they use devices for three or more hours each day.
Eye Doctors Provide Several Ways to Protect Your Vision in the Digital Age
Rest your eyes for 15 minutes every two hours. And be sure to blink! It helps keep your eyes moist and reduces your chances for developing dry eyes.
- Use anti-glare screens. When you have little or no control over your surrounding light, use an anti-glare filter over your computer screen at work and home.
If you use a computer and electronic devices, your eyes are working very hard. Give them the rest and support they need to stay healthy.
If you have persisting eye problems or discomfort, please call our eye care clinic at (757) 966-2206.
- Give Your Eyes a Break. Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and view something 20 feet away.
